In less than forty-eight hours, the horse nation will officially come alive as the 2010 World Equestrian Games begins. This worldwide event will last for only two weeks, beginning September 25 and ending October 10 this year. The United States is very honored and privileged to be the host of this phenomenal event for the very first time.
The location of the Games will be held at the beautiful Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. I can speak from personal experience that for any horse lovers out there who have never been to the park… GO! It has been five years since I was there, and I definitely plan to go back. There have been many additions and improvements made to the Kentucky Horse Park in just the past two years, such as a new indoor arena and an outdoor stadium.
In preparation for the Games, 22,500 temporary seats will be added to the stadium to accommodate for 30,000 people. Also, numerous temporary structures and seating will be constructed to house all of the events and activities. The United States can proudly say that the 2010 Games will be the first time EVER that all eight horse events will be able to take place at the same time due to the amazing facilities we are able to provide. This is a huge accomplishment for Americans in representing and hosting the World Equestrian Games.
This mega event takes place every four years, two years prior to the Olympics. The World Equestrian Games took place for the very first time in 1990 at Stockholm, Sweden. America is the sixth country to host the Games following Sweden, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and Germany. Over the past twenty years, this event has grown and expanded from only six disciplines the first year to eight that will take place in 2010 for the very first time. These events include Dressage, Driving, Endurance, Eventing, Jumping, Para Dressage, Reining, and Vaulting. Fifty-eight countries will be represented by more than nine hundred athletes and over thirteen hundred horses. There are currently four nations that are scheduled to field athletes for all eight disciplines; they are Australia, Canada, Germany, and the United States.
The World Equestrian Games is an incredible event full of entertainment and pure athleticism. There is a jam-packed schedule that will fill these next two weeks to the brim and will consume the attention of millions of horse crazy people like myself. I would just like to wish the best of luck to all of the athletes taking part in this amazing experience and will be rooting for the American team the whole way through. Let me know what ya’ll think. Later Partner!
